Hullo Eccles was written for the 150th anniversary of the marriage
of Henry Eccles and Mary Jane Ingram who were married in St Francis Church in
Melbourne in
November 1850. A great family reunion was held in the same church in 2000 with
Mass celebrated by Fr Ian Howells S.J.
one of their descendants.
This book focuses on the Eccles family
of Sir John Eccles, beginning as it does with his grandparents Henry and Mary
Jane Eccles who along with their children were pioneers in the Gippsland area of
Victoria. One
son, William Eccles married Mary Carew and had two children John Carew and Rose.
Rose married Eric Howells and had six children. Irene and Jack Eccles were
married in Oxford in 1928. The growing family moved from
Oxford to Sydney
in 1937 then lived in Dunedin from 1944 until
1952 when they moved to Canberra. Sir John Carew Eccles was knighted in
1958 for his contributions to science and in 1963 was awarded the Nobel Prize
for Medicine and was named Australian of the Year.
John and Rene Eccles had nine children;
Rose, Peter, Alice, William, Mary, John, Judith, Frances and Richard who all excelled
in their chosen fields. Their own
family stories and achievements are included as well as other branches of the
family tree.
The title Hullo Eccles shows it is an introduction
to this particular line of the Eccles family and is a record for future
generations.
